At last meeting the wonderful Carol Carter....

With great enthusiasm and anticipation three of my art-loving friends joined me for the Sunday afternoon trek to Bethesda to see the NAWA show "Stepping Over The Line" at Strathmore Mansion. NAWA features six of the premier watercolor artists of North America - Keiko Tanabe, Thomas Schaller, Carol Carter, Mark Mehaffey, Kathleen Alexander and Nicholas Simmons - who have formed a group - the only one in N.A. I am assured - to exhibit together both domestically and abroad.

All of these artists have a presence on Facebook and I am privileged to be "friends' with most of them. So it was very exciting to be able to actually meet them and to see their work in person! And what an afternoon it turned out to be. Overcome by the quality of the work and the quality of the wine (?) - two of us "got off our wallets" - as my Canadian friends used to say - and splurged on two wonderful paintings by my good friend and mentor, Nicholas Simmons. It was unexpected and even the realization that I, most likely, cannot get "Barcelona!" (sorry Nick, I do not know how to do an upside down exclamation mark which precedes the B in Barcelona) into my car has not dampened my joy at having purchased this beautiful painting. (Roof rack anyone??) My bank account on the other hand..... :)

All of the other artists had wonderful paintings on display - I recognized many of their works only previously glimpsed on Facebook - and I would have loved to have purchased a few more had I been able. Maybe the next show!

I recently returned to Switzerland for a school reunion. This was not a place where I had the happiest of memories being separated from my parents at a young age and away from my sunny childhood days spent in the intensity of life in Calcutta. Expat Brits sent their children away to school when they were ten and so, in his infinite wisdom (NOT) my father decided to do the same and hey - I'd learn French!

With some trepidation I returned to Prealpina which has now reverted to being a hotel and the cloud hanging over those years disappeared. When I walked in I felt....... NOTHING. That chapter has been put to rest and I was emotionally free to admire the truly beautiful view I had gazed upon for six years with resentful eyes. It seems that it is true - face your demons and they will vanish.

As a side note - everyone who saw it was incredibly envious of our view. If we complained about the school - the comeback was invariably: "But the view!" This became a running joke and we decided to name our reunion: "But THE VIEW!"

I have moved and I am transforming the second bedroom into my studio. All those guests trundling through will have to share space with my paints and assorted artistic paraphernalia..... I know they won't mind and will love being surrounded by my bold - cough - endeavors. :) But the new floors I put down were too dark and did not reflect light from the wonderful solartube I had just installed. After pondering on many wacky ideas I came to the brilliant conclusion that I should paint - a la abstract expressionist - on a white floorcloth and put that down to, not only reflect the light, but to make a statement about the process of creation that I struggle with joyfully most days. And it is done!

I didn't have time to experiment with a new painting - the deadline was two weeks out - and, suffering from art show frenzy burnout, I decided to do a new one just larger. As my full repertoire was hanging in the show, I couldn't be sure that one I might have submitted would not sell! I should not have worried on both counts. :)

Sunday, January 9th finally came and, in spite of the freezing weather and a Baltimore Ravens playoff game (how can you avoid such things months in advance), the turnout was excellent! I had hoped for more pictures but the traffic flow kept me from taking many and friends also had their hands full chatting each other up. Many thanks to my friend and model, Amy Booe and to my teacher, mentor and friend, Nick Simmons who courageously arrived in spite of being ill and feeling well below par. Much appreciated master!

Well we held the senate seat for Nevada! Thank God for that and, according to Marilyn, my friend from Las Vegas, there were several recent ads showing some of the biggest Republicans in the State coming out in support of Harry Reid. Interesting...He has done a lot for the state!

I went to the Mall!!!! Sandy and I drove to Metro at New Carrollton thinking, because it was the start of the line, we would get seats. But it was not to be. Thousands of folks were standing in very long lines just to board the trains! Undaunted we decided to drive into DC and enter the "back" way through Georgetown. Once over the bridge we quickly found a parking space in an open lot off M Street and hurried to find a taxi. With no taxi fairy to help us out we arrived, forty five minutes later, on foot at the HUGE celebration of tolerance and sanity engulfing the Washington Mall. The crowd was extremely good-natured and exhibited some of the funniest and clever signs I'd ever seen. A Christine O'Donnell impersonator in black suit and pearls along with her handler exhibiting an "ODonnell for Senate" sign stood next to a man in a giant penis suit - if it can be called that - and had their pictures taken! And this was just one of many funny groupings that we encountered...Sometimes we had to figure out just what the signs meant. Penis man for example was, according to a nice couple from Illinois that we met, a possible reference to O'Donnell' s fixation on the repudiation of masturbation! Well....sounds right to me. :)

After slowly, and I mean very slowly, negotiating the moving morass of folks headed north to the Capitol we decide to push our way onto the steps of the National Gallery in order to check out the scene from a somewhat lofty height. And what a scene it was. While we couldn't see much, the Jumbotrons were partially hidden by trees, we could see the vastness of the crowd. It was a stirring sight! Our afternoon ended with a tasty treat at the Gallery's small ice cream and coffee bar and then we limped back to Georgetown passing the White House which I had never seen before coercing a taxi driver from Virginia to take us the last few blocks to Georgetown. M Street was awash with revelers for Halloween and we had to inch our way slowly back to our parking lot. A very happy, fun and exhausting day!

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert put on a wonderful show, and, although I had to check most of it out on the TV - I had set the DVR before I left home that morning - I was so happy to have been there, at the Mall, for this wonderful and iconic event. It was so good to be reminded that there were many, many other people from around the country who were not angry tea baggers and who could air their differences without spitting, vilifying or stomping on someone's head!

Today I spent the afternoon in Ellicott City, MD, waiting for 4 of my paintings to be judged worthy (or not) to enable my entry into full signature membership of the Baltimore Watercolor Society (BWS). While waiting to pick them up I wandered the historic district of EC on Main Street and had a tasty lunch at Johnny's Bistro. This is a beautiful part of town full of interesting shops and restaurants and boasting a bubble making magician dressed in Harry Potter-like attire much to the excitement of the kids!

I will not know the results of my artistic efforts for another 10 days and so am practicing my patience skills - those I am not known for. :) It was a gorgeous day, however, and a very easy ride on up from Annapolis so all is well. I'm posting one of the paintings that I submitted, the other 3 have already been featured on this blog. I'm sure I'll drag them out another time and post them again!!

Having recently cajoled my friend Amy, into a long photo session I have been using different images taken of her in various poses and have currently maneuvered a few together into groupings. There is plenty of fodder for painting after this last session and I'm hot and heavy with my swimmers - one of my favorite subjects as you can tell! The possibilities with these ladies seem endless and offer me a consistent theme upon which to practice techniques. "En Garde"!!

Still working with swimmers and their shapes.....synchronized swimmers this time. I threw caution to the wind and worked purely with fluid acrylic. I didn't want the lines to be lost or blurred so painting them in first with fluid acrylic allowed me to fearlessly wash over the whole picture with paint. With racing heart I hurried to keep the paper wet encouraging the color to flow all while trying to protect the light on the figures! Fluid acrylic is so much stronger but dangerously quick to dry. Lifting color and correcting mistakes is pretty much blowing in the wind - lots of wind references here - with apologies to Peter, Paul and Mary.

The one perfect lily nestled midst all the green

This seemed to me the most iconic of pictures of China throughout the centuries with the cattle, limestone mountains and farmer in the perfect image

The "mountains" are the limestone deposits I mentioned in a previous post. Fascinating, and the subject of hundreds of paintings of China over the centuries! Everything is so lush. And the drops of water on the lily pads look like glass pebbles sitting on the surface of the leaves.

Just received my super catalogue from the Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolor Biennial Exhibition! It is a beauty!! And included in the package was a nice bonus - the first issue of The Art of Watercolor with some wonderful interviews inside. I've posted pictures of the front pages of some of the articles to elicit even more interest in this quality magazine. David P., you rock! Of course, Xidan Chen, Guan Weixing and Janine Gallizia also reign supreme. And I enjoyed reading up on the other artists represented , some of whom I was not previously familiar with.

The Album of Exhibits is wonderfully done and I am excited to go through all the paintings as slowly as possible - it looks to be a sumptuous feast! OK sounding a bit fangirl but it really is a lovely catalogue and I am intrigued to see who all the participants are and to check out their entries. Can't wait to give it a shot for 2012! :)

China

June 2009

I took hundreds of pictures during my two weeks in China last June. These are from the very early part of the trip spent in Yangshuo. This river trip was fascinating - the "mountains" that look so like the Chinese paintings one sees, are, in fact, limestone deposits. Vendors, balancing precariously on their shallow dugs, came right up to the boat and, while we collectively held our breath, managed, somehow, not to fall in. It was a misty day and a strong current from the heavy rains moved us about quickly.

I'll have many more to post - particularly when I have not managed to finish a painting without tearing it up.

Loving Degas as I do, I could not resist this subject matter when it came up. This painting is from a picture of my childhood friend, Minja, when she attended ballet school. The lessons didn't stick, however, and she never made it to Swan Lake or Riverdance for that matter! Still, she has lovely expression and looks extremely Degas-like in this shot!

"Wishful Thinking"

This is one of the very first watercolors I did - and I still like it as one of my best. I tried to incorporate some of the lessons learned like the water - assisted vertical paint flow and the mingling of various colors for the skin. I should try to do it again and see whether I can improve on the technique - and if I can replicate that lucky water flow!! BTW, that is a hand mirror being held in her hand...tough to tell for some ...(guess I really do need to improve my technique :) ) ...oh, and yeah, the brownish-red round detail at the bottom is not part of her abdomen but a flask sitting at her side. :) Perhaps I should have painted it green the color it actually was!

In June I was fortunate enough to travel to China with a small group from my Chinese acupuncturist's office. We support some students at his Traditional Chinese Medicine School in Chengdu and got the chance to not only visit but to see the first three graduate! It was an honor and a real pleasure.

I'll have many pictures to post over time as the trip was filled with so many photo opportunities - and I took full advantage! These are the first in the series and my favorites for obvious reasons. Who could resist having their picture taken with a baby (juvenile - perhaps 18 months old) Panda?? These were taken in Chengdu where some of us decided that, rather than spend our money on souvenirs, we would donate to the breeding program instead.

If some of the photos look a bit fuzzy it is because I was continuously in motion playing with this little girl, tickling her and snuggling with her and, I might add, even singing to her. :) She was adorable as you can see, and quite small under all that very soft fur. Her keepers had given her an apple to distract her but that didn't stop her from going for my sunglasses at the end!! It was also quite hot as you can tell from the sweat and flat hair - on me that is, not baby P. She was very well taken care of - those scrubs and plastic gloves are to protect her and not me!

These two paintings were done by a well-known Filipino painter - Fernando Amorsolo - of my mother and father. They are beautifully executed demonstrating the quality of light, softness of touch and thin application of paint that Amorsolo was known for. Here is a portion of what my father had to say about them:

"Following her transfer from the 9th General Hospital on Biak Island and some island hopping, Lee was able to join me in Manila, P.I., where she was put in charge of the WAC Dispensary in De La Salle College. During our service in Manila we met a painter, Fernando Amorsolo. Before the Japanese occupation he had been one of the more prominent Filipino painters. Throughout his long career portraiture was one of the reliable sources of support for his ever-growing family (he sired no less than 18 children).

After some negotiation he agreed to paint Lee and me. Four sittings were scheduled for each of us. These sittings were supplemented by several photographs which he took. Lee decided at the last minute that she did not want to be painted in uniform. She was able to borrow a dress from one of the nurses and Amorsolo obligingly painted this on her.......Amorsolo died in 1972 at the age of eighty. Arts of Asia Magazine devoted the cover and lead article of its May-June, 1984, issue to Amorsolo and his work. His paintings were still being offered for sale by various galleries in the USA as late as 1998."

Another painting in the "Amy" series - this one is watercolor and graphite. I'm particularly pleased with the red dress! Looking back, red seems to be a favorite color particularly when painting with watercolor and working with pastels. It comes off so beautifully - you just want to keep on going and when done, quickly start on another piece!

Finally picked up my pastels after a year and painted this picture of my friend, Amy, whom you might recognize from the previously posted works of "Sunflower Sundress" and "Red Suit" (although she's pictured from the back in that piece.....so maybe not... :) ). It is such a different medium from watercolor and fluid acrylic that I had to re-orient myself and bumbled around for many hours before getting back into the swing of things. And talk about messy!! The dustbuster had a real work out.

Amy makes a great model and I look forward to doing more with her. Sure beats.........uh......I was going to say "dead flowers" but thought better of it. I actually like flowers dead or not and must try my hand.......oh wait......I did!! I actually bought a watercolor dvd by Shirley Trevena and loved it. Jumped online to purchase some sticks and oil pastels and, along with my watercolor, went for it!! And my favorite tip: the credit card!!!

Diving Divas#1

I finished this painting using watercolor acrylic. As many of you know, this risky (aaaagh) medium enables prolific use of the water bottle without having the color you just put down run. The only drawback is the speed with which you have to move to get the color right lest the paper dry. Very tricky!! I bang around in my small studio space tilting the paper this way and that while the air turns blue from my slightly inventive language. But all's well that ends well after a bit of tedious clean up. Oh, and the fun thing about this composition is that you can actually, turn the paper any which way and it works. So if you like another angle - feel free!!

OK - so New York isn't THAT exotic compared to..say...China! (More on that anon.) Marilyn, from Las Vegas, and I stalked NYC this past week in conjunction with our friend Bill, my old neighbor from East 44th Street. We did the usual tourist stuff, things I never did when I lived in Manhattan (unless friends come to mooch - er - visit, does one ever??).

So off to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island we went. Marilyn's mom entered the country through EI and so it was a sentimental journey of sorts. And it was fun!! The ferry ride was the best with stellar views of NY Harbor and Jersey. The wind was blowing at gale force intensity but the sun was shining and the ferries rocked and rolled across the water. I was very impressed with the handling of the boats that were being blown either on or off the dock....good captaining!!!! (Old yacht charter broker here....)

"Billy Elliott" was our Broadway treat and it was a tasty one. A fabulous show if you ever get the chance. But the hight point had to be a reunion with my friend Marina from early, early (age 12 or so) days at the infamous and strict boarding school - Prealpina. We hadn't seen each other in @#$%& years but fell right back into the easy friendship of our youth!

What with an allergy/cold attack the previous week and then a week of fun in NYC, I haven't had time to paint. And I feel the urge badly. Maybe I'll be renewed and reinvigorated with happy results! We'll soon find out.....

Here is the same painting pushed as much as I could using the cutout filter alone. I need to learn how to produce some of the other effects to enhance the result. This playing around with photoshop produces some really interesting images that are fun and very challenging to paint. I feel like I'm lost in the "60's when playing with all the colors and form distortions....I am you and you are me and we are all together........

I took this painting and fooled around with it in Photoshop after one of Nick Simmons' suggestions, and the following images show the original LIW 2 painting with two different levels of the cutout feature applied. It is a lot of fun to do the Photoshop thing with actual photos but to do it with an original painting is really FAB!! Now if I can just paint them this way........

I'm working on paintings having to do with swimmers and swimming related stuff.. A former competitive swimmer myself, it seems a natural habitat... In fact, apart from being on a mountainside, I love nothing more than being in the water.

The top picture's final result was an accident. I ruined the water originally (doesn't everyone at some point?) and was determined not to lose the swimmers. So I cut them out and redid the background using fluid acrylic for a stronger statement. Then I pasted the original racers on. It's titled (since I'm new to blogging I didn't get the sequence correct for adding a title before posting another image) "Into the Blue 1"

The second one, "Ladies-in-Waiting 1", is a combination of watercolor and fluid acrylic.

It is with a bit of arm-twisting from Nick Simmons that I launch myself into the blogosphere. And not without a lot of trepidation, I might add. What is easy and natural for my youngest friends looms large in my psyche. So, for those of you who stumble across me, please read and comment gently if you wish. My ramblings should improve with time - I hope.

These pictures are from my last trip to one of my most favorite places in the world - Scotland! And, as you can guess by my last name, the country of my heritage. I spent time with Margaret Evans on one of her wonderful "Paintaways" www.shinafoot.co.uk (OK - I tried to make this a link but failed...) to the Isle of Skye and then drove north to Nairn - a small, seaside town on the Moray Firth. Scotland is a painter's paradise and I even love the weather! No extremes of heat just bountiful beauty. And that's the extent of my lyrical waxing for now...
